Boxer Dogs: Clowns Not Guard Dogs
Boxers have been traced to exist for over a hundred years now. They are said to have originated from Germany as the crossbreed between the Brabanter Bullenbesser (from Belgium) and the English Bulldog. Boxer dogs are known for their intelligence, hardiness, loyalty and its being family-oriented which makes it a great family pet. It is often commented that a family with a boxer is one that is filled with laughter and joy.
Boxer dogs have the natural tendency for learning new things and mental stimulation. It is widely recognized that bored boxer dogs make bad dogs. They need to be constantly trained, just like with other dogs.
Contrary to popular beliefs, boxer dogs are not guard dogs, they can be excellent watchdogs though as they will bark at any strangers if need be. However, they don't like isolation and are not naturally aggressive or viscous. Actually, the majority of boxers are known to not stand a time separated from their owners. They need continuous interaction with the family and are very affectionate to their owners. In fact, one of the most difficult training exercise for this breed is not to attack their own owners.
Because of their sturdiness and other "strong" physical features, they are mostly trained to become guard dogs. Sadly, many are left into abandonment due to their owner's dissatisfactions. In actuality, they cannot be easily trained for attack and they are abused for such.
Boxer dogs are overwhelmingly playful. On a poll survey conducted, dog owners described boxers as clowns, contradicting the aggressive portrayal widely accepted today. They are exuberant from day one to their senior years. Boxer dogs is an entertaining breed and always have the knack for making unique tricks like the "kidney beaning" and the "woo-woo". These two are often manifested when they are excited or overly happy (which is true in most cases).
Kidney beaning is a dance, which is characterized with a semi-circle turn then a turn for a full circle. On the other hand, "woo-woo" is a distinct sound they made which appeals like a bark but is actually not.
Boxer dogs have the personality that is unique in their breed, but this does not apply with all dog owners. They need to be constantly fed with physical and mental exercises to spend their high resource of body energies and add to it the attention they require. Boxer dogs are not known of sleeping the whole day away or go off 0on their own. If they are not sufficiently exercised, they may be very destructive, this they do to amuse themselves. For at least twice a day, they must be exercised or jogged.
One good way of providing worthwhile activities for boxer dogs is the obedience training. In fact, it is a must for all owners of this breed but to be sure, obedience training is both a win-win situation for both the owner and the dogs.
During training, it is not unusual to see stubborn boxers. Due to their intelligence, they tend not to listen to commands given to them. But above this, they are quick to learn and are eager for further learning.
A Boxer dog is an outdoor pet, nor can it tolerate extreme weather conditions. They have short coat and a short nasal cavity; both are not apt for cold weather and hot weather respectively. Additionally, these are lap dogs however large they get.

Think About it - Pet Insurance Makes So Much Sense
Pet insurance is not a new concept; people have been doing it for years and saving money on health care of their pets. For some people it seems like an unnecessary expense, but it is not a wise decision to go without pet insurance. As you would never think of going without insurance of your family members, then why you should not insure your pet?
Pet insurance can vary greatly and you should choose one very carefully for your pet. Most insurance plans cover expenses like routine care and annual checkups. But some of them only cover injury or sickness. If you can handle general problems, fine then it will be better for you to consider a pet insurance that caters with serious conditions. Others only cover sickness or injury. Emergency coverage is also there but for other coverage you will have to wait for one month or so.
Coverage and costs of a pet insurance depend on pet’s age, size and breed. Good health of your pet will be a positive point when acquiring pet insurance.
Here are some reasons why you should buy a pet insurance.
1) An average of seventy five percent family pets visit veterinary clinic every year for treatment.
2) Forty percent of all vet fees come from unforeseen illnesses or accidents.
3) Only 20% of family pets are covered by pet insurance.
4) The average vet bill for attention and care needed following a road accident involving a cat or dog last year was around $1000 to $1,500.
Of course, the statistics is scary. It will seem scarier when you will come to know that only a monthly payment of $40 to $80 can do it all for you.
Some pet insurances to choose from:
Pet Accident Insurance
This pet insurance gives coverage to your pet against any accidents. But some companies do not cover the incidence of poisoning your pet, so before choosing read the fine print to clear all major and minor points.
Pet Accident and Illness Insurance
In this case you will get full coverage insurance. Your insurance company will pay you all the costs and expenses incurred in case of your pet having suffered any accident or illness.
Some important points to be consider while choosing a pet insurance:
1) Before going to apply for a pet insurance you should make a search for the best one. A simple search on Google for "pet insurance' will give you many results. There is a long list of pet insurance companies, so compare them and choose wisely.
2) Often insurance companies start insuring pet from the age of six months but some does not give coverage to your pet if he or she is more than of eight years. Therefore search the most suitable insurance for your pet.
3) Some options are always there, when it comes to healthcare. If you do not want to take an expensive policy then you can search for discounts. Your discussion with a vet will give proper information about all discounts available.

The Problem Dog: How to Deal
You may from time to time have a problem with your dog. Here are some of the common problems and how to deal with them.
The Dog That Runs Away
If your dog runs away when he knows the meaning of the word come, the next time you go for a walk, carry a rolled magazine. If he does not listen when you call him, throw the magazine at his heels, kneel, call him again and praise him while he is coming to you.
The Cat Chaser
The next time you take your dog where there is a cat, carry a small rolled magazine. Put your dog on leash and introduce him to the cat. Hold the rolled magazine and if he lunges forward say "NO!" and quickly lower the magazine between them. If he is off leash and makes a dash for the cat, throw what you are holding at the dog's heels and tell him firmly "COME!"
The Car Chaser
Break the habit of chasing cars by arming yourself with two or three empty food cans and one or two empty cartons. Hide in the car while someone else drives. When your dog comes running out, and the car has stopped, jump out and chase him by throwing things at him.
The Playful Biter
When a puppy nips in play, biting is apt to become a habit. When your puppy grabs at your arm or at your clothing, cuff him on the nose and tell him "NO!" After you cuff him, pat him. This annoying habit could make your parents dispose of your dog.
The Serious Biter
Dogs bite for three reasons: to guard, when they don't want to do something, and when they are afraid.
Scold the over-protective dog. Make him understand that he must never attack because he feels like guarding.
Muzzle the fear-biter. Force him in a kind way to let strangers handle him. In time he may get over being frightened.
If your dog resents combing or growls when you take his bone away, rap him sharply on the tip of the nose and tell him you will have none of that! Don't bully him but let him know you are the master.
The Chewer
Confine the dog that chews in a room where he can do little damage. Give him toys and bones made of hard rubber or rawhide, or give him a tennis ball. Wait until you catch him chewing on something he shouldn't, then startle him! Throw something at the spot and tell him "NO!" Throw the object when he isn't looking at you.
The Digger
You may not be able to stop your dog completely from digging but you can discourage the habit. The next time you see him uprooting the flower bed or digging holes in the lawn, toss something at the spot and call out "NO!" Do this every time he starts to dig.
The Dog That Wets In Spite
If your dog wets to "get even," have someone hide where the dog can't see him. Play with another dog or go away and leave him. If out of jealousy or resentfulness he leaves a "spite" puddle, the person hiding can throw something or scold him and catch him in the act.
The Thief
Does your dog steal things from your closet? Balance a small pie pan on the inside handle of the slightly open door. Your dog will make the correction himself when the pan falls.
The Cave Man
Does your dog hide under the chair or the bed and growl when you try to get him out? Ask someone to drive him out by poking at him so he will run to you for protection. When he does, reward him with a pat.
If you apply these principles, you should be able to overcome any of these problems with your dog.

Taking Care of a Molting Hermit Crab
Molting is the natural process of growing for a hermit crab. During this time, it sheds its exoskeleton and forms a new one. During the molting process, a hermit crab is very defenseless. A molting crab is under a lot of stress and extra care is required during this vulnerable time. The frequency of molting depends on the size and growth rate of each individual crab. Smaller crabs, that grow much faster may molt every 3-4 months. Larger crabs that grow much more slowly may only molt once per year.
The first thing to remember is that when molting, a crab will bury him or herself; do not move him or her! As hard as it is not to pick him up and look to see if he’s ok, you must be brave and let him do his thing. Molting may take anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks for the average sized crab. Smaller crabs may take a shorter time; larger crabs may take longer. They may stay buried the entire time. Another important thing to remember is that molting crabs are in danger from other crabs while they are molting. Other crabs may attack the molting crab while it is vulnerable. Always keep the molting crab in an isolation tank. Most pet stores have dividers available to section off one part of an aquarium from another.
Once the process is complete, the crab should not just be put back into the main tank, as it takes awhile for the new exoskeleton to harden. The real way to tell if the crab is ready to be back in with the other crabs you may own is when they are active and appear healthy again. This process can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. Be patient and let your friend heal.
A question you may have about molting is how you will know when your crab is going to molt. There are usually pretty obvious signs. Your hermit crab will most likely start to act a bit differently and look a bit different just before molting. However, though there are crabs who exhibit obvious signs, always be prepared for molting as some hermit crabs may surprise you by molting when you least expect it. Keep a close eye out for the following signs and be prepared to support your molting hermit crab through this stressful and vulnerable time. Once you see these signs, you should consider isolating the hermit crab from the other crabs right away.
- Sluggishness or relative inactivity.
- Ashy body color.
- A crab might dig more than usual. (Always check tank conditions as this can also be a sign of temperature and humidity problems.)
- Eating and drinking significantly more. The crab may stop eating completely just before a molt.
- Spends lots of time around water.
- A molt sac, or water sac under the abdomen, may form.
- Missing limbs may occur.
- Whitish color on legs and claws.
- Cloudy, whitish color to the eyes Legs may seem weak.
- Eye stalks may face away from each other.
Observe carefully for these signs of molting and offer your hermit crab support. Remember, isolate him, and leave him alone. These are the best things you can do for your crabby.

Simple And Effective Solutions For Aquarium Algae
Eradication of encrusting algae could be done simply by periodically scraping the sides of the aquarium or scrubbing the rocks.
For those with plastic plants and a completely white gravel bed, the situation could be more tasking as it would be necessary to bleach the rocks to remove all traces of algae.
However, if you do this, do make sure that you rinse the gravel thoroughly afterwards. Bleach is highly toxic, and even small amounts can have a drastic effect on the aquarium fish.
Since the primary cause of green algae is too much light. The fist step in the treatment schedule should be light reduction then partial water changes and an adequate stocking with natural aquarium plants. A final treatment with an algae remedy should ensure that the problem is eradicated and is at least kept at bay for some time.
One of the factors mentioned above is the use of natural aquatic plants as a means of algae control. This is really more effective than many people think.
For a start, luxuriant plant growth will filter out some of the light keeping algae in check. In addition plants absorb a large variety of chemicals from the water, thereby starving algae of some of their essential nutrients e.g. nitrates (not nitrites).
Surprising as though it may seem, an adequate plant stocking level is approximately 50 small plants per square root of available space.
The treatment I mentioned is the use of an algaecide. I must stress the word "use:" it is very different to "abuse"!
Yet despite this difference, I know that some people will still persist in pouring the chemical remedy into their aquarium and expect the problem to disappear overnight, even though they have done absolutely nothing to alter the conditions in the tank that brought about the problem in the first place.
The conditions I stated above have to be adhering to for any lasting effect to occur! Now that we know how to curb the menace of the green algae, in another article I shall discuss it's ugly "sister" brown algae (the brown encrusting algae whose case is the reverse of green algae).

Finding the Right Training School for You and Your Pup
So you are thinking about some dog school training for your pup, but with all the training schools out there which one is right for you and your dog. Below are some general points and steps to take when choosing a dog school training program.
1) Make up a short list of dog schools consisting of schools in your area and ones you may have heard about from friends etc. Now go to these schools and ask to sit in on a dog training session, most should oblige but if they don't you can cross them off your list right then. While at each dog school keep a close eye on the training methods used and how the dogs are responding. You will want to find a method that both you and your dog will be comfortable with. If time permits try to take in 2 training sessions, one at the beginning of the program and one near the end, that way you can watch how some of the dogs have progressed.
2) While sitting in on each of the dog school training sessions talk to some of the current owners to get their feedback. A lot can be learned about the dog trainer and the course just by asking a few questions. Find out how long they have been attending the dog school and if the training has been affective.
3) Make a note of the breeds at each dog school training session and how they respond to the training method used. Certain breeds will respond differently to say the clicking method than others. Are the trainers showing flexibility in their training methods to accommodate different breeds and personalities? Simply put if your dog is a rottweiler joining a training school consisting mostly of poodles is probably not in your best interest.
4) Do your homework and get some background information on each of the dog schools. Find out how long they have been in business, what education the trainers have, and what prerequisites are involved before attending. It is a good idea to only consider training schools in which vaccination is a prereq.
5) Remember dog school training should be about developing a better relationship between you and your dog, so any dog school where you drop your pup off and come back later should not even be considered. Find a training school with an enjoyable environment, where the dogs are obviously having a good time. Dog school training shouldn't have to be a chore, rather a part of your week that you and your dog look forward to.
